The band’s name, Klipwerf, is derived from a small settlement in the Calvinia district, known for its farm and telephone exchange. The band’s association with this area and the unique way people would book their performances, through the “Klipwerf” telephone exchange, led to the name becoming widely adopted.
Klipwerf Orkes plays “Boeremusiek”, a traditional South African genre with influences from European folk music, often featuring instruments like the concertina, accordion, and guitar.
While they didn’t record their first album until 1988, they have since released numerous albums, many reaching gold and platinum status, making them one of the most successful “Boeremusiek” groups in South Africa.
The band has continued to perform and record for over five decades, with a strong connection to their roots and a dedicated fanbase. Their music continues to be enjoyed by generations of South Africans.
